WIC Week 2021
WIC Week 2021 was a huge success! This initiative, created by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is held annually in March tobring awareness to job opportunities in the industry and to celebrate the pioneering women in this sector. We honored this tradition with both internal and external events, companywide commemorative shirts, a donation to NAWIC’s Education Fund, and exciting giveaways! Additionally, our team created a socially-distant video to drive home our support and message for diversity and inclusion.

Safety Success
Innovative Safety Success Alert! While tasked with renovating sections of an active research laboratory building, our team pre-planned response solutions should an incident occur. One of those potential incidents, a sprinkler discharge, was identified and steps were taken to provide information and equipment to minimize the impacts. In addition to signage detailing emergency contacts, a map consisting of travel routes, and a written response procedure, our team assembled equipment needed to mitigate significant damage. The equipment includes a ladder, wet vac, buggy to capture the discharge, plastic sheeting, sump pumps, hoses, duct tape, extension cords, etc.
While we all work diligently to prevent incidents from occurring, incident response remains a critical component of our safety model.
Hats off to our team for thinking ahead and taking action before an incident can occur!

This month, OSHA released their Most Frequently Cited Serious Violations lists for Fiscal Year 2020. The construction industry violations are as follows:
1. Fall Protection– Residential Construction
2. Eye & Face Protection– Use of Appropriate Protection
3. Ladders– Not Extended 3 ft. Above Landing
4. Fall Protection– Training for Those Exposed to Fall Hazards
5. Fall Protection– Unprotected Sides & Edges
6. Head Protection– Use of Protection
7. Aerial Lifts– Fall Protection
8. General Safety & Health Provision– Inspections By a Competent Person
9. General Safety & Health Provision– Frequent and Regular Inspections
10. General Safety & Health Provision– Employer to Maintain Program
Unfortunately, fall protection remains a leading offender for most frequently cited violations for the tenth straight year. We urge everyone to emphasize engineering hazards during the design phase and building safety into the project. Spend time pre-planning efforts, train folks accordingly, and continuously research new and innovative solutions to prevent fall hazards in the industry. Our sector employs some of the best and brightest at problem-solving, let’s engage dialogue and work collaboratively to send our workers home safe!
