CDA Receives Industry Recognition
At the end of September, CD & Associates’ President, Lisa Casiello, virtually accepted the Done Deals Award presented by Women’s Business Enterprise East. This award is given to the Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE) that has done the most business with other certified WBE’s in our region.
This accolade reinforces our commitment to CDA’s established diversity program to promote and foster the growth of other women owned businesses who service the construction industry. We are honored to have received this award twice in the last five years.

Our Commitment to Whole Body Health & Safety
Our Q3-20 Newsletter proudly announced the successful launch of our internal health and wellness initiative—Whole Body Health & Safety. The evolving challenges this year really uncovered the need for us to provide additional resources to our employees to ensure their entire well-being, including wellness outside of the workplace.
Our first quarterly challenge was a Virtual Walk/Run 5K. Employees and their families were able to register for two divisions—competitive or novice—for this event. Results were submitted via fitness trackers and compiled for awards.
Emergency Preparedness and Response
More this year than any before, we learned that not all heroes wear capes. We are thrilled to have an everyday hero amongst us. One of our employees, who wishes to remain anonymous, recently witnessed a horrific vehicle accident on his way into work early one morning. This individual stopped immediately, donned his ANSI Class 2 Hi Vis gear, and responded to the vehicle occupant’s aid. The vehicle, which was on its side once it came to rest, had all airbags deployed and a trapped driver. With the assistance of another driver, the driver’s door was wrenched open to allow for escape. Our employee remained at the scene until State Troopers arrived.
We are incredibly proud of this individual’s quick thinking and courage, but remain especially impressed by his presence of mind. When responding to emergencies, many people react based on emotion versus logic and clear thinking. Our employee had the presence of mind to evaluate the scene for safety first and take protective measures (put on hi visibility clothing) to prevent a potential second emergency.
Three important steps to remember for responding to emergencies include:
Plan: Create an emergency action plan and ensure necessary supplies are stocked. A chain of command should be established and personnel trained.
Evaluate: Check the scene for hazards; ensure it is safe to proceed.
Respond: Act in accordance with your abilities; prioritize hazards and concerns.
Industry News
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently approved the first elastometric half mask respirator without an exhalation valve for use. The COVID-19 pandemic influenced this decision based on the concern that the exhalation valve would not filter airborne containments from the wearer and therefore could perpetuate the spread of the novel coronavirus. This approval was granted only with P95 or P100 particulate filters and can be implemented for both source control and personal protection.
